A Word From Our Pastor…
Welcome back, Old Man Winter! It’s nice to have the cooler temps again. Here are a few things to keep in mind heading into the weekend.
1. Wednesday Nights are back! We had a great crowd last night for Bill’s taco soup. It really hit the spot on a cold night. Our groups will be cranking up next week. Check out all the information on those groups down below.
We learned in the sermon on Sunday about the rhythms of discipleship the early churched practiced. They are the following:
· Studied the Bible together
· Repented
· Prayed together
· Served together
· Worshipped together
· Practiced generosity together
· Shared their story with others
There are always risks in practicing these rhythms of discipleship with others, but this is how we grow spiritually–by taking risks. I want to encourage you to take a bold step and join us for one of our small groups this month.
2. Technology Free Zones. This past Sunday I shared the first message from our Connected Life series on how technology without boundaries can rob us of community with others and greater joy.
Jonathan Haidt in his book The Anxious Generation says, “We overprotect our children in the physical world, and under-protect them in the digital world.” As a follow-up to last week’s sermon, I want to challenge you to place some boundaries around technology use at home. Block out times of the day or activities by creating a technology-free zone. You might consider setting it around dinnertime, bedtime, during game nights, movie night, or at some other specified time. I almost always silence or put my phone in airplane mode when I am praying and having my devotional time. Experiment with technology-free zones for the next two-three weeks and share with me your experiences and practices.
Bonus challenge: Remember this week, don’t just text someone—call them. Don’t just pray for someone—pray with them. Don’t just say you care—show up.
3. This week our topic in worship will be “Guardians of the Digital World.” I can’t wait to tell you about the day when I suddenly realized that I needed to become a guardian of the digital world!
